In this survey, we’d like to learn more about the experiences of LGBTIQ+ people with refugee backgrounds in Berlin. We’re particularly interested in your experiences with anti-queer bias, violence, and discrimination, as well as the support you’ve received or would like to receive.
Your experiences are important. The results of this survey are intended to help evaluate and further develop existing services and protective measures in Berlin.
Before you begin
Some questions address personal and potentially distressing experiences, such as discrimination or violence. Please decide for yourself which questions you would like to answer.
Participation is voluntary.
You may skip single questions. You may also exit the survey at any time. You are free to decide which information you wish to provide and which you do not. The more data we have at the end, the more accurate our assessments of the current system can be and the better our recommendations for services in Berlin will get.
If you need support or would like to talk to someone about your experiences, you’ll find links and contact information for counseling and support services in Berlin below and at the end of the survey.
What is the study about?
Camino, a non-university social science research institute based in Berlin, has been commissioned by the Berlin State Office for Equal Treatment and against Discrimination (LADS) to conduct a study on the experiences of discrimination faced by queer refugees. Berlin was the first German state to recognize the special vulnerability of LGBTIQ+ refugees in 2015 and to develop the “Berlin Model for Supporting LGBTI Refugees.” This includes, for example, services for safe housing, protection from violence, counseling, information, and support.
With this study, we aim to find out what experiences LGBTQ+ refugees have in Berlin and how well the existing protection and support services are working. The results should also highlight areas where improvements are needed.
The online survey is an important part of this study.
How does the survey work?
Filling out the questionnaire takes about 15 minutes.
The more people participate, the better we can identify different experiences and needs, and thus develop recommendations for improvements accordingly.
What happens to your information?
The survey is anonymous. Your answers cannot be traced back to you personally. The results will only be analyzed and presented in summary form.
Do you have any questions?
We’re happy to answer any questions you may have.
